From Oxford – A new vaccine may soon be available to prevent meningitis in infants. A study of over 400 infants has shown that the vaccine MenACWY is safe and resulted in over 92% of infants developing immunity to all 4 serogroups. This is an important finding because many of the 2000+ cases of meningitis occur in infants. From Maryland – The FDA is reminding physicians of the black box warning associated with bisphosphonates, which are medicines used to treat bones that are weakened from osteoporosis or osteopenia. The medicines, which include Fosamax, Actonel and Reclast, can cause severe joint and muscle pain. And finally, from China – Starting a lifestyle program in addition to using the diabetes medication metformin can counteract the weight gain that may accompany the use of anti-psychotic medications. A clinical trial was conducted looking at patients with schizophrenia who had a greater than 10% weight gain since starting anti-psychotic medication. The study showed that lifestyle intervention including exercise and a healthy diet in conjunction with the use of metformin resulted in a reduction in BMI and insulin resistance.
